The BenRiach 15 Years Old Sauternes Wood Finish: a very well made single malt with lots of fresh and sweet notes.

content description

The BenRiach 15 Years Old Sauternes Wood Finish is part of the distillery's Wood Finish Series. It's a limited edition single malt originally matured in ex-bourbon barrels before being finished in sauternes (sweet wine) casks. These sauternes casks are sourced from the Bourdeaux region of France. The expression is non-chill filtered and bottled at 46% ABV with no artificial colouring added. The average price of this bottle is around $100.

On the nose: a lot of sweetness! Fresh ripe fruits (ripe grapes, ripe honeydew melon, red apple), berries, vanilla, apricot jam, digestive biscuits and some spiciness in the back.

On the palate: The sweetness continues on the palate. You'll get the same ripe honeydew melon notes, marzipan, toffee, black pepper, apricot jam some honey and oak tannins.

Finish: Medium length and slightly dry with sweet ripe grapes, almonds and butterscotch.

Overall: if you're fond of sweet single malts then the BenRiach 15 Years Old Sauternes Wood Finish is a must. Then again, if you're not a fan of sweet notes, then stay away. We really enjoyed it but we'd treat it more like an aperitif or have it with a dessert course.
