The Mackmyra Scorpions: A light and fruity whisky that seems to be made more for hardcore fans of The Scorpions, than for fans of whisky.
Mackmyra have become known for collaborating with rock bands to create certain limited edition expressions. We've already reviewed the Mackmyra Motörhead which, as you can probably guess, was a collaboration between Mackmyra and the British rock group: Motörhead.
This time they're collaborating with the German rock band: The Scorpions. The Mackmyra Scorpions is a no age statement single malt matured in ex-bourbon and ex-Oloroso sherry and finished in German sweet cherry wine casks. This expression is non-chill filtered and bottled at 40% ABV with no artificial colouring added. The average price for this bottle is around $70.
On the nose: dark dried fruits, dark chocolate, vanilla, nuttiness and sweetness.
On the palate: a light single malt which starts off spicy and oaky. The cherry makes its first appearance here with notes of butterscotch and dried dark fruits. In the back there's some bitter dark chocolate.
Finish: Short, sweet and spicy.
Overall: a well balanced and light single malt from Mackmyra. It's not particularly complex or rich and didn't really excite us. This seems to be made more for hardcore fans of The Scorpions, than for whisky fans.
