Review: Mortlach 12 years Old The Wee Witchie

The Mortlach 12 years Old The Wee Witchie: a very good single malt which combines and brings out the best of both the ex-bourbon and ex-sherry cask flavours.

content description

Announced in July 2018, Mortlach 12 Year "The Wee Witchie" is one of three new core whiskies for Mortlach and they replace the Rare Old, Special Strength, 18 Year and 25 Year which were introduced in 2014. Morlach is known for producing meaty, sulphury whiskies with its distillation process in a method called "The Way". They use a 2.81 times distillation process (invented in 1896) which uses a variety of pot stills with different shapes and sizes.

The Mortlach 12 years Old The Wee Witchie (named after the smallest pot still in the distillery) is matured in ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks. It's chill filtered and bottled at 43.4% ABV and contains artificial colouring. The average price of this bottle is around $65.

On the nose: very fruity (berries, pears, apples), vanilla, caramel, sandalwood and chocolate.

On the palate: sweet and oily with fruitiness, vanilla, butterscotch, honey and chocolate.

Finish: spicy with notes of marmalade, cinnamon and marzipan.

Overall: a very good single malt which combines and brings out the best of both the ex-bourbon and ex-sherry cask flavours while still showing off the meaty Mortlach spirit.
