Bunnahabhain 18 Years Old; one of the best 18 year old whiskies we've tasted.
Bunnahabhain is kind of like the Cinderella of Islay distilleries. It's not as big as Caol Ila, or as famous as Laphroaig, Lagavulin or Ardbeg and it's not as exciting as Bruichladdich or Kilchoman. It's the ugly child that no one notices. But, from what we've read about their re-introduced core range, it's time that we take more notice of them.
Unlike old versions of Bunnahabhain, the new expressions are non-chill filtered and have no artificial colouring added to them. The core range of 12, 18, 25 and 40 year old expressions are matured in both ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks and are unpeated.
The re-introduced Bunnahabhain 18 Year Old has been kicking ass at International competitions world wide. 3 double golds, 4 golds and 1 silver at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition. A gold medal at the International Spirits Challenge and 4 silver medals at the International Wine & Spirits Competition. As we mentioned earlier; it's time to take notice of Bunnahabhain.
Let's taste the Bunnahabhain 18 Years Old.
The nose is very rich, you'll get a lot of sherry notes, ripe bananas, apple, cream, cinnamon, vanilla and a little saltiness. Excellent interplay at work.
The palate is where this whisky really shines. Dark chocolate, rum, leather, honeyed sweetness, coffee, sherry, vanilla, apples, dates and salted caramel. The finish is long and salty with dried fruits and spices.
This may be one of the best whiskies we've tasted so far at The Mashing. It really is a wonderfully unique dram. You can find it at amazon UK for around $90. We suggest you buy 2.
